Boy Scouts of America Prepared for Life

THE VALUE OF SCOUTING TO OUR YOUNG MEN AND WOMEN

Discovery is at the heart of Scouting. Whether it’s a campout, derby car race, or hike on the trail, we believe every adventure helps us uncover a little more about ourselves. We build the foundations for humility and compassion—strengthening character through actions—to prepare youth for a lifetime of leadership.

Best of all Scouting is Fun! The best way to learn and grow.

Education

Scouting is designed to promote good behavior while arming our Scouts with the skills and knowledge they need to make wise decisions. Scouts, families, and communities, are helped through education on:

  • Physical and mental health
  • Setting and achieving goals
  • Citizenship
  • Helping others in need.
  • Career preparation and education
  • Fighting child abuse and substance abuse
  • Environmental stewardship

Leadership Skills

Scouting teaches the skills of ethical leadership.  Scouts BSA gives a scout training in leadership skills and then gives the age-appropriate responsibilities to learn and build skills.

Scouting alumni are more likely to assume leadership roles in jobs, clubs, school organizations, and are.:

  • Almost 90% of all Senior Class and Student Council Presidents
  • More than two-thirds of all Rhodes Scholars
  • More than two-thirds of military academy graduates
  • Forty-one of those selected as NASA’s career astronauts are Eagle Scouts. Some have become legends, like Neil Armstrong, the first man to land a spacecraft on another world, and Jim Lovell, the commander of the ill-fated Apollo 13 mission who led his crew safely back to Earth. That legacy continues today where Eagle Scouts fly high as crew members and commanders of the International Space Station (ISS). Eagle Scouts Raja Chari and Kjell Lindgren were furthermore selected as commanders of the SpaceX Crew-3 and Crew-4 missions, respectively.

Values

Research conducted by Louis Harris & Associates showed that when a random sample of Scouts was asked what Scouting had taught them, almost nine out of ten responded with the following:

  • get along with others (88%)
  • always give your best effort (87%)
  • have confidence in yourself (87%)
  • set goals for yourself (87%)
  • care for other people (86%)
  • treat other people with respect (86%)
  • take better care of the environment (86%)

In addition, Scouts were found to be more likely to:

  • put the needs of others before themselves. (sign of a good leader)
  • make the most ethical, not necessarily easiest, decisions
  • value education and the environment
